We start in Barcelona. Here is the Sagrada Familia,
Church of the Holy Family by Antoni Gaudi
Back in 2012, ten of us sojourned and sketched the Mediterranean, visiting a variety of cities in Spain, France and Italy. It was so much fun, I've decided to do it again, but this time at different ports of call. We'll spend our first morning (before boarding the ship) in Barcelona, Spain.

Villefranche-sur-Mur, France (Nice)
Part of the French Rivera, Villefranche boasts that it has a better beach than Nice and much smaller in size with a maze of narrow roads, squares and their famous covered streets.

Ajaccio, Corsica, France
The birthplace for Napoleon, this seaside port is blessed with a harbor so beautiful, according to the Cruise Critic,  that local artists jostle with each other for a good spot from which to paint it.

Civitavecchia, Italy (Rome)
Home to the famous Forte Michelangelo, designed to protect the port of Rome, this small seaport does not disappoint,  graced with super photo opportunities. If you choose, you can spend the day in Rome instead, through one of the cruise's excursions. We've taken the two-hour bus ride and it is well worth the expense.

Messina, Sicily
Named the gateway to Sicily, Messina is bursting with history dating back to Roman and Greek days. Wherever you go, you'll find shopping boutiques of every kind, vendors selling hand-painted artwork, local musicians and fresh produce for sale (in season).

Valette, Malta
Considered one of the most beautiful settings in the world, Valetta is an artist's paradise. So much so that the town was one of the earliest sites assigned by UNESCO on the World Heritage list. Most of of Valetta has preserved its 16th century charm.

Barcelona, Spain
Our trip returns and ends in Barcelona, which to me is one of the loveliest cities in the world. It is bountifully surrounded by amazing art--even the buildings being touched with an artist's hand. Along with enjoying the many museums, gardens and the like, a must visit is to the Sagrada Familia by Antoni Gaudi, still in construction.

The Cruise
As you can see, during the Mediterranean cruise, we will be stopping at several ports of call. Each one is a fantastic sketching and photographic opportunity. Except for one port we simply just walk or take a short boat ride to shore. As mentioned above, at the port of Civitavecchia, you can choose to take a bus tour to Rome or stick around for a sketching/photography lesson.  We will be at sea only one day (all others are visiting ports).

What will we sketch and photograph?
Everything and anything--from ancient buildings to the local flora. I enjoy haunting neighborhoods, so I'll probably lead you up to one or two during the trip.
Forte Michelangelo commissioned by
Pope Julius II to defend the port of Rome
 in Civitavecchia.

As with all my travel sketching workshops, I provide a demo for the group on location and then give individual instruction the rest of the time. There should be free time available on shore as well to do some shopping or sight-seeing.

Please be assured that no sketching experience is necessary. I will teach you as we go along. There is also a full-day sketching workshop here in Portland, at my studio about a month before our trip. Moreover, my step-by-step method of teaching is spelled out in a workbook that everyone receives and uses at each port.

By the time we return to Barcelona, you should have a sketchbook filled with all sorts of memories and a camera bursting with photos. A month or two after the cruise, we will again meet in my studio to share our sketching and photographing experiences.

Here's what people are saying:

My husband and I went on Jill's Mediterranean cruise in 2012. I was looking into how to travel sketch having never tried such a thing. With Jill's help and the amazing scenery on the cruise the whole experience was amazing! Jill is very knowledgeable as well as patient and encouraging. Her classes on board were very helpful. My husband and I hadn't traveled much. We found Jill to be an excellent resource as to what to do and not do, what to take and not take, yet letting us go on whatever excursions we wanted as well. Going with other like minded people made the voyage very special. Highly recommend the experience. Barbara S.

I have been on four travel sketching trips with Jill. I was reluctant to take a travel sketching class because I am not a fast sketcher, but Jill showed me how simple it is. Every trip has been a wonderful experience! Travel sketching isn't about making perfect art; it's about making beautiful memories. Anyone can do it. I have loved every trip. Always worth every penny!  Cheryl C.

I have traveled with Jill on two sketching trips, and I am always amazed at how much I learn from Jill and have fun in the process.  Jill is an excellent teacher; she shows drawing and sketching techniques; demonstrates the techniques; and then allows the students to progress on their sketching.  Traveling with Jill is a great experience. She is will organized and outlines what to expect from the trip. As a result, the trips are so much fun.  I really enjoyed the, Sketching on the Mediterranean cruise, I took with Jill in 2012.  I met wonderful people with the same interest in sketching and saw some beautiful places.  I recommend traveling with Jill, since I know you will come out of the trip with new skills and great memories. Marty S.

I have been on three trips with Jill, each one has been a wonderful, enriching experience.  She goes above and beyond to give her students an enriched experience of the locations, great instruction for sketching a memorable sketch book of the adventure and a more intimate understanding of the people and places visited. Kelley P.

Jill your trips are professional and so much fun! We did more than I ever expected! Vacationing in all our cities from a Cruise is so easy! Loved every minute! Thanks.  Betsy L.

During our sketching trip [England, 2014], I improved my drawing and observational skills, all while enjoying the beauty and history of southern England. Jill thoroughly researched the area and provided us with ideas for side trips as well as our sketching rambles. She is well organized, patient, and above all -- supportive. With her encouragement and hands-on teaching, I brought back new skills, new friendships, and wonderful memories.Susan B.

I had a great time.  It was a great to get comfortable with sketching while traveling.  Jill did a great job increasing our awareness of the surrounding and then gave great guidance on how to capture the essence of the place.  This was all done in a comfortable, fun setting.  It was a great trip.
